Andhika NugrahaAndhika Nugraha is an artist/web designer from Indonesia whose work has been featured on various mediums including a t-shirt currently for sale at DesignGive.com, and he was kind enough to give JungleJar an interview.

(Christopher): How long have you been creating digital artwork? Do you also express yourself using other artistic tendrils such as painting or drawing?

(Andhika): I started creating digital art around 2004, so now 2009.. it’s about 5 years, and I’m still learning and learning. Hehe, and yeah, sometimes I like doin’ traditional artwork..but just basic drawing.

(Christopher): What are some of your favorite tools that you enjoy using to create your art?

(Andhika): My favorite tool would be Corel Draw, and sometimes I use Adobe Photoshop too..

(Christopher): I heard that one of your designs was recently featured on a skateboard. Would you like to tell us a little about that?

(Andhika): Yeah, my friend asked me to draw on his broken skateboard deck. It’s all done by marker & spray. It was so much fun because it was a new thing for me.

(Christopher): You created an amazing T-shirt design for designgive.com entitled: “God”. Would you like to talk a bit about your inspiration for this design?

I know that ‘God’ may have inspired you a bit, but what other thoughts did you have going through your mind as you created this design?

(Andhika): I was surprised when “god” became popular on DeviantArt, and more shocked after DesignGive.com printed it on a t-shirt. Thanks to those who bought the t-shirt; Thank you so much. If you see the man in that picture it looks like he’s praying, and I think it was appropriate to name it “God” — A good reflection on what we have done in this world..because we’ll be back to God. And well, the rest of my artwork is my experiment to find my own style — till now my friend called it toolkit’s style..hehehe

(Christopher): While looking at your online portfolio at deviantart, I stumbled across http://toolkit04.deviantart.com/art/Workspace-and-Playground-68522655; Could you tell us a bit more about “Ziegel Rot”? Also, was this your first art exhibit?

(Andhika): Yeah, it was my first time, but that time I was in a group called THEMutants (consisting of my college friends), so it’s a group exhibit. The exhibit was held in Bogor at my friend’s house — low budget. We printed our artwork in an A3 size, and a lot of local indie bands were also rockin’ up tha place. It’s a dream come true, and I can’t wait to be in another art exhibit; Maybe my own exhibit — just Andhika, hehehe

(Christopher): Would you say there is a large digital art / web design community in Indonesia outside of just the internet? If so, have you made an effort to contribute to this community other than THEMutants’ group exhibit?

(Andhika): Well, there’s several design communities here in indonesia, but not really that large of a single aggregated community. Each city has its own community and it’s still primordial (they only bring their own culture), like Bandung/Jogja have their own culture, but of course they will bring Indonesian culture foremost.

(Christopher): In your opinion, do Indonesian designs, whether on printed materials, a website, or the color palette used on the outside of a local cafe, have distinctive features that are exclusive to Indonesia?

(Andhika): Nowadays, in my opinion, a lot of Indonesian designers still put local values in their art, because they also want to be recognized as an Indonesian designer; But with all that internet/globalization thing, their art has become all mixed up — especially with young designers. They probably think making art with their culture in mind is old fashioned. Our culture is plural & rich, and I’m sure it’s still good in the international forum.

(Christopher): What are your favorite design / web design related websites that you enjoy browsing?
Favorite design?

(Andhika): Ehm..can I say my own design? If so, my favorite is ‘God’ of course..hahaha. Well, out there so many artists produce many great artworks, so all their designs are in my favorite list. And web design related that i enjoy is probably DeviantArt, but I think I will hit JungleJar.com more often right now..

(Christopher): Who are the top 3 musical artists you’re currently most fond of?

(Andhika): Ugh it’s a tough one. Ehm…I love all kind of music genres, but my favorite musical artists would be Linkin Park (they influence me so much), and I enjoy Jason Mraz (last album was briliant), hehe, and I adore Bob Marley (after all the hectic work, listening to his masterpieces makes me relax).

(Christopher): Is there anything you would like to say to our readers? Any websites or people you would like to give a “shout out” to?

(Andhika): For JungleJar readers, enjoy the process, never give up, and of course be ORIGINAL; And thanks to all people that have been supporting me till now..

I’d like to say “thank you” to Andhika Nugraha, and you can view his portfolio at DeviantArt.com by clicking this link.
